Have you heard people say they “own” a timeshare? There is often much confusion about what timeshare ownership actually means, but you should know the facts before you sign any contract. Here are some of the differences between timeshares and true property ownership.
● Timeshares only allow you access to the property. You don’t have any ownership in the land.
● Timeshare deeds typically either grant you a partial ownership based on how much you paid or leased ownership. This keeps the deed in the developer’s name and you’re granted a partial lease.
● Timeshares have usage restrictions preventing you from having unrestricted access to the property.
As you can see, owning a timeshare is far different than owning your house or any other type of property. In reality, timeshares are more similar to an agreement for use than anything else. When you look at it in this way, you get a clearer picture of what you’re actually getting when you pay for a timeshare.
